Table full of foods that are good for oral and overall health

Did you know that nearly half of adults over 30 in the U.S. have some form of gum disease? This statistic may surprise you, but taking steps to prevent this oral health issue is easy! While you can keep up with your dental hygiene routine, you can also adjust your diet. Some foods can help lessen any symptoms or even prevent them in the first place. To protect your gums from harm, here are three foods you should stock up on.

1.)  Leafy Greens and Crunchy Vegetables

Vegetables not only can promote your overall well-being, but also your oral health! They are full of vitamins and nutrients that help boost your immune system while giving the soft tissues in your mouth what they need to stay strong. For instance, crunchy ones (such as cucumbers, celery, and carrots) can help you produce more saliva. This will help wash away harmful bacteria that can attack your gums!

Leafy greens, like spinach or kale, are also tasty options that are rich in vitamin C. This nutrient can help keep your gums strong while also reducing inflammation. Your body will be able to better fight off infections. Additionally, the texture of them can scrub plaque from your teeth!

2.)  Fresh Fruits

While you may choose a sugary dessert, consider eating some fresh fruits instead. They are sweet options that are also loaded with nutrients like the food group above. Oranges, grapefruits, and other citrus are full of vitamin C as well. Berries are another great choice as they are rich in antioxidants, which can help reduce bacteria in your mouth.

3.)  Omega-3 Rich Foods

Omega-3 is an essential fat that can reduce inflammation. This is often a symptom of gum disease, and when it’s chronic, it may damage the soft tissue and other structures that support your teeth.

You can get this nutrient through a wide range of foods, such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, or herring to name a few). You can also get it through seeds and nuts, like pistachios, macadamia nuts, and sesame seeds. Add them to other meals or enjoy them as a snack to ensure you get plenty of omega-3s!

Enjoy these items with a nice glass of water, and you can help keep your mouth pristine! You’ll be able to wash away any debris and bacteria, letting your oral health stay strong in the long run. Keep up with your at-home dental hygiene routine and consistent visits with your dentist, and your teeth and gums can stay in great shape for a lifetime.
