Are you looking for a way to brighten your smile? If so, then you probably know all the hype about teeth whitening products. Many social media influencers like to push the idea that you can easily enhance your pearly whites by several shades with OTC items. However, they may not be as effective as people say. Read on to learn what to expect from store-bought teeth whiteners and why it’s best to seek professional treatment from your dentist!

Will Over-the-Counter Whitening Products Work?

There are usually two reasons why you might be tempted to try OTC teeth whitening products: they’re convenient and more affordable. While they can lighten your smile, the results won’t be as effective or lasting. Most items are one-size-fits-all, which won’t consider the causes for your discoloration and if you have restorations. The whitening ingredients are also mostly diluted, meaning they won’t have the strength to maintain a radiant smile.

The Risks of At-Home Whitening Remedies

Some people try to use certain cleaning products and other at-home remedies to brighten their teeth, but many of these solutions involve serious risks. The majority of whitening toothpastes contain abrasive agents, which can damage and wear down the surface of your enamel. There’s also the myth of rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide to illuminate your pearly whites, but this can actually disturb the relation of good to bad bacteria, harming your oral health in the long run. Lemons or lemon juice is also used by many, but its acidity can corrode your enamel—permanently damaging your smile.

Should I Get Professional Teeth Whitening Instead?

The safest way to whiten your teeth is to seek professional treatment from your dentist. They might offer in-office procedures to brighten your smile in just one visit, or they could give you a custom-made take-home kit for your own convenience. They can also advise you on which whitening products would be best for you, so you can achieve the results you want while protecting your teeth in the process!

Using OTC whitening products might offer some changes, but they won’t be the healthful kind you’re looking for. By consulting your dentist instead, along with keeping a good dental hygiene, you can be sure to enjoy a radiant smile in no time.
